What is ENS?

Connect your Elite domain to your ENS-compatible crypto wallet for seamless cryptocurrency transactions directly to your domain. Utilizing ENS (Ethereum Name Service), we enable you to leverage your domain name, like coolexample.com, for sending and receiving cryptocurrency, eliminating the need to share your complete crypto wallet address.

This article will answer all of your questions related to ENS.

What is ENS and how does it work?

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized domain name system operating on the Ethereum blockchain. Functioning much like the traditional DNS system of the internet, ENS leverages blockchain technology. It simplifies crypto wallet addresses into human-readable formats. Thus, rather than disclosing your public crypto address for transactions, you can provide your Elite domain linked with ENS.

What is a blockchain?

A blockchain represents a form of distributed ledger technology dispersing data across numerous computers within a network rather than concentrating it in one place. Each data unit, termed a “block,” is interconnected with the preceding and succeeding ones, forming a sequential chain of blocks.

Every block encompasses a roster of transactions authenticated by numerous nodes (computers) in the network. Once appended to the chain, the data within a block becomes immutable, ensuring a transparent and secure transaction history.

When employing a conventional DNS domain alongside ENS, it’s referred to as DNS namespace integration. Ethereum Name Service (ENS) facilitates DNS namespace integration, enabling the linkage of DNS domains (such as .com, .org, .co, etc.) to ENS. This integration allows .com or .org domains to function seamlessly on both traditional DNS and ENS platforms, retaining all familiar DNS functionalities.

For instance, if coolexample.com were connected to ENS, it would permit direct cryptocurrency transactions to be sent to coolexample.com, eliminating the need to disclose your public crypto address.

Absolutely nothing! Connecting your Elite domain to ENS comes at no charge, courtesy of gasless integration. Simply owning a domain registered with Elite and possessing an ENS-compatible crypto wallet incurs no extra expenses to link them together.

What if I don’t have an ENS-compatible crypto wallet?

If you lack an ENS-compatible crypto wallet, you must establish one with a provider, such as a Coinbase wallet, before associating it with your domain. Elite neither endorses nor promotes any particular crypto wallet provider. It’s crucial to explore your alternatives and select a provider aligning with your requirements and security preferences. Upon securing a crypto wallet, you can proceed to connect it to your Elite domain, enabling you to initiate cryptocurrency transactions through your domain.

The procedure for linking your DNS domain to ENS may vary depending on the provider, but it generally involves several common steps.

  1. Activate DNSSEC: This establishes a trust connection between the domain and ENS. DNSSEC functions by digitally signing DNS records to ensure their integrity during transit, guarding against malicious redirection of your domain.
  2. Verify ownership: Insert a TXT record into your DNS records and confirm your domain ownership. Your ENS Manager App will provide the specific values required for input and verification completion.
  3. Review your domain: ENS now supports gasless linking, so once the initial steps are done, you’re good to go! Access your domain through the ENS Manager App.

What happens if my domain expires?

Following expiration, your domain will maintain its resolution without alteration for a period of 5 days. Subsequently, your zone file transitions to a read-only state, precluding any editing, and your domain is parked. Typically, the link to your ENS-compatible crypto wallet remains unaffected until 26 days post-expiration. Should you desire to retain the connection to your ENS-compatible crypto wallet, renewal of your domain is necessary before the 26th day following expiration.

What happens if I transfer my domain?

Two days subsequent to the transfer of your domain to another registrar, your zone file will be removed from your GoDaddy account. Although the link to your ENS-compatible crypto wallet will persist without interruption for an additional 2 days, it will then cease to function. To prevent any disruption to the connection with your ENS-compatible crypto wallet, you can opt to update your domain to utilize GoDaddy nameservers.

Are there any limitations or restrictions?

Indeed, utilizing ENS with your GoDaddy domain entails certain limitations and requirements.

  1. Mandatory DNSSEC: Before integrating your conventional DNS domain with ENS, activation of DNSSEC on your domain is obligatory. DNSSEC establishes a secure connection between your domain and ENS.
  2. Compatibility Constraints: Presently, not all browsers and platforms fully support ENS. Some users might need to install browser extensions or utilize specific blockchain-compatible browsers such as Opera, Brave Browser, and Puma Browser to access ENS domains effectively.
  3. Reliance on Blockchain: The functionality of the Ethereum Name Service hinges on blockchain technology, rendering it contingent upon the health and stability of the utilized blockchain network. Issues like network congestion or attacks may impact the accessibility of the domain.
