They are the perfect balance between Shared Web Hosting and Dedicated Server Hosting, giving you a great platform for your website. But what makes a VPS stand out from the hosting crowd? And with so many online companies selling VPS’ nowadays, how do you know you’re getting the most for what your paying? Well, we’ve done the research to find the best, most affordable, and fast Virtual Private Servers that are available in 2023 to save you the trouble. This article will briefly explain what a VPS is, and then give a detailed explanation of which VPS’ are the best, and where you should get yours from.
What is a Virtual Private Server?
A VPS is a type of hosting that gives the user the same stimulation as a dedicated server, providing them with the same resources as a dedicated server would, but at a fraction of the price. On a Virtual Private Server, you will be sharing a physical server with other users, but with your own personal resources. So, your CPU, RAM, and storage will always be 100% yours. A VPS also offers better security and maximum efficiency for your website, as well as scalable resources. This means that you have the power to alter the amount of hosting resources your site uses, allowing your server to grow as your website does. Whilst this sounds great (because it is great!), you must be careful with who you buy with if you’re looking for the best VPS out there. With this in mind, we’ve scoured the internet in search of the best VPS hosting when it comes to value for money, performance and other key factors.
The Elite Web Co., top our list by ticking every box. They offer both self-managed and fully-managed VPS hosting, giving great options for both those with and without hosting experience. Their fully managed plans start from $107.99 per month, and the self managed plans come from just $9 a month! With CPU ranging from 1 core all the way up to 8, there really is something for everyone. Elite use OpenStack with high-performance SSDs and KVM virtualization, which not only provides you with the best speeds, but it also gives you unrestricted access over your hardware resources.
You will also have unrestricted root access with SSH keys; quite literally giving you the keys to your server for ultimate control. This means that you can access to all files, as well as allowing you to install third-party software and more. With fully managed plans, you’ll be able to access their award-winning phone support, who are there to assist you 24/7/365 with any and all of your issues and needs via a dedicated server team. If you opt for self managed then you are provided with limited support.
2 – GoDaddy
GoDaddy is one of the leading hosting providers in the world and has thoroughly earned the number 2 spot on our list. They also offer both self-managed and fully-managed hosting, once again giving you flexible options for your hosting needs. In fact, GoDaddy and Elite are official partners, meaning that they offer the same packages and services as Elite does! This may make you wonder what the differences are between the two, and why Elite is considered better than GoDaddy. This is because Elite has much more competitive prices than GoDaddy.
Contrary to the information displayed on their website, when you sign up with GoDaddy you will only receive the cheap prices displayed if you sign up for a 3-year contract. This locks your plan in for a considerable amount of time, essentially trapping you in your own hosting plan. However, this doesn’t take away from the great VPS hosting GoDaddy has on offer.
Hostinger is another great option for those looking for a secure, reliable, and fast VPS. One of our favorite things about Hostinger is the comprehensive and diverse plans they offer (shown below). This gives you a more specific idea of the plan size you want, which is of course dependent on your website and how large it is. Another great thing about them is their 30-day money-back guarantee, so if you find yourself unsatisfied with your hosting, you can always get your money back.
4 – Bluehost
Bluehost are a hosting company who are fairly well-renowned in the web hosting business. They’ve been around for quite some time, so you already know that reliability is going to be a given with them. They offer three VPS plans which start from $17.99 per month. Much like the other plans, this includes 2 CPU cores. However, unlike other companies, they offer two plans with 2 CPU cores. The second of these has more RAM, storage, bandwidth and an extra IP address.
The downside to Bluehost is the pricing on their plans. Whilst on the surface it may look great, they use some crafty tricks to make it seem this way. The first is the price changes. For the first couple months you may be paying a great price, but when you’re on a monthly, or even yearly contract, this can fluctuate very quickly. Additionally, they tend to leave out extras such as SSL certificates, and then charge a large amount for them.
5 – HostGator
Another popular choice for hosting is HostGator. This is because of the impressive variety of services offered. However, when it comes to VPS hosting, they only offer three plans, starting from $23.95 per month. Much like the other plans, they also offer scalable resources, allowing you to customize and readily adjust your CPU, RAM, and disk space. However, there are a couple of issues we found with their plans. They claim to have a 99.9% uptime guarantee. However, this only applies to their cloud hosting plan, meaning there are no guarantees on any other plans. Furthermore, they only have US-based data centers.
6 – Scala Hosting
The final contender on our list may be more suited to some rather than others. Scala Hosting’s vast product range gives you the ability to customize your own VPS server from the get-go. This gives you a specific price for exactly the hosting you want – no extras, no features in a plan you don’t need – just what you want. However, they only offer cloud hosting, which isn’t awful – but may not be desired for all.
Scala Hosting uses sPanel VPS control panel, opposing the traditional cPanel control panel. This panel is targeted and most suited for those with experience. Whether you’re a web developer, web hosting company, or anything in between – this may be an ideal choice for you. Another reason why this might not be the best for novices is the lack of phone support. This means taking on a lot more responsibility when it comes to managing your server.
VPS hosting is a powerful way to manage your website. Hopefully, by now you understand the importance of choosing the right hosting company for your project, and why different hosting companies may be slightly suited to different individuals and businesses.
